Illuminating the Depths of Aaru: Part II
In our ongoing quest to create the most immersive and atmospheric dungeon-crawling experience, we’re thrilled to unveil the next chapter in the visual evolution of The Book of Aaru. Building upon the foundation laid in our previous update, we’ve introduced a suite of new lighting and rendering techniques that further enhance the game’s visual fidelity and realism.
Advanced Reflection and Refraction: Our new reflection and refraction system, which utilizes reflection and light probes, allows surfaces to interact with light more realistically and believably. This creates a more connected and cohesive environment, as light bounces and reflects off of various surfaces, creating a sense of depth and realism.
Dynamic Shadows: Every object in the world now casts dynamic shadows, creating a more realistic and believable environment. Our lighting system has been optimized to allow for real-time shadow calculations, ensuring that shadows move and react to the player’s actions and the environment.
Ambient Lighting: We’ve added subtle ambient lighting into the surroundings to create a more captivating experience. These soft, diffused lights, which lack a clear source, help to set the mood and guide the player’s eye through the environment.
Enhanced Emissive Materials: Objects with emissive materials, such as dangerous traps or magical artefacts, now have additional light sources to simulate their glow. This creates a more visually striking and impactful effect, drawing the player’s attention to these important elements of the environment.
Skybox and Lighting: We’ve started integrating a skybox system that allows us to project diffused light with area patterns, creating more realistic effects. This simulates the way light behaves in real-world environments, such as caves and underground tunnels. The skybox also helps to create a more inviting and believable sense of place.
By incorporating these new lighting and rendering techniques, we’ve created a more visually stunning and engaging experience that brings The Book of Aaru to life.
